What Each Count Means
Counts follow the rules most editors and forms use, so the numbers match what an essay portal or a character limit expects.
- Words
- Runs of letters or numbers. Hyphenated words and contractions count as one word: twenty-one and it's are one each.
- Characters
- Every letter, number, space and punctuation mark. Use this for limits like meta descriptions, ad headlines and social posts.
- Characters without spaces
- The same count with spaces, tabs and line breaks removed, which some publishers and translators use for pricing.
- Sentences and paragraphs
- Sentences end with a period, question mark or exclamation point. Paragraphs are separated by a line break.
- Reading and speaking time
- Based on the average adult rates of 238 words a minute reading silently and 183 words a minute reading aloud, from a 2019 review of reading-speed research. Brysbaert (2019)
- Keyword density
- How often a word or phrase appears, as a share of all words. Common words such as the, and and of are left out of single words so the list shows your topics.
How to Use Keyword Density Without Overdoing It
Density is a check, not a target. Google has never published an ideal percentage.
Check your main topic is on top
The words you want to be found for should appear in the top few. If filler words lead, the page is not saying much about its topic.
Look for accidental repetition
One phrase far above the rest often reads as stuffing. Swap some uses for synonyms and related terms your buyers use.
Cover the questions, not the count
Pages rank by answering the search well. Add the price, process and proof buyers ask about, and the right words follow naturally.
