What Goes in a Sitemap
A sitemap lists the pages you want in search results. Everything the generator leaves out has one of these reasons.
- Canonical, indexable pages only
- List the version of each page you want in results. Pages that point their canonical elsewhere, carry noindex, or answer with an error are left out. Google: build and submit a sitemap
- Full https addresses
- Every entry is an absolute URL on your own site. Other domains, files like PDFs and images, and addresses with query strings are left out.
- lastmod
- When your server sends a Last-Modified date, we add it. Google uses lastmod when it is consistently accurate.
- priority and changefreq
- Not included: Google ignores both values.
- robots.txt
- Pages your robots.txt blocks are left out, since search engines will not crawl them anyway. sitemaps.org protocol
- Size limits
- One sitemap holds up to 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed. Bigger sites split it and list the parts in a sitemap index.
How to Use Your Sitemap
Five steps from download to indexed.
Upload it to your site root
Save the file as sitemap.xml at the top of your site, so it opens at yourcompany.com/sitemap.xml.
Point robots.txt at it
Add a line to robots.txt: Sitemap: https://yourcompany.com/sitemap.xml. Every search engine that reads robots.txt will find it.
Submit it in Search Console
In Google Search Console, open Sitemaps, enter the address and submit. Do the same in Bing Webmaster Tools.
Check what was left out
Look through the list of skipped addresses. A page left out by mistake usually has a stray noindex or a canonical pointing somewhere else.
Keep it current
Regenerate after adding or removing pages, or switch on your CMS's own sitemap so it updates itself.
