The Meta Tags That Matter, and the Ones That Do Not

A page needs only a handful of tags. These are the ones search engines and social networks read.

Title
The headline of your search result and the tab name in the browser. The single most important tag on the page. Google: title links
Meta description
The summary Google often shows under your title. It does not affect ranking, but a clear one earns more clicks. Google: snippets
Canonical
Tells search engines which address to rank when the same page is reachable at several URLs, such as with tracking tags. Google: canonical URLs
Robots
Only needed when a page should stay out of search (noindex) or its links should not be followed. Leave it out for normal pages.
Open Graph and X card
Control the title, description and image shown when the page is shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, X and in messaging apps. The Open Graph protocol
Keywords
Google confirmed in 2009 that it ignores this tag for ranking. Harmless, but it will not help you rank. Google Search Central

How to Add the Tags to Your Site

Paste the code into the head of the page, or copy each value into your website builder.

  1. Fill in the fields

Title and description first, then the page's full address and a share image of 1200 by 630 pixels.

  2. Fix the warnings

The warnings say what is too long, missing or wrong. The preview shows what searchers will see.

  3. Paste into the head

On a hand-built site, paste the code inside the page's head tag. On WordPress, Shopify, Wix or Squarespace, copy each value into the SEO fields of the page settings instead.

  4. Check the live page

After publishing, run the free SEO audit on the page to confirm Google sees the tags.

Meta Tag Questions

What meta tags do I need for SEO?
A title and a meta description on every page, a canonical link, and Open Graph tags for social shares. Add a robots tag only when a page should stay out of search. Most other tags do nothing for ranking.
Does Google use the keywords meta tag?
No. Google said in 2009 that it does not use the keywords meta tag in web ranking, and nothing has changed since. You can include it, but it will not help.
Where do I put meta tags?
Inside the head section of the page's HTML. On WordPress, Shopify, Wix or Squarespace you usually type the values into the page's SEO settings rather than pasting code.
What is the difference between the title tag and the H1?
The title tag is what search results and browser tabs show. The H1 is the main heading visitors see on the page. They should cover the same topic but do not have to match word for word.
Do I need Open Graph tags?
If people share your pages, yes. Without them, Facebook, LinkedIn and messaging apps guess a title and image, often badly. They do not affect Google rankings.
Should I use noindex?
Only for pages that should not appear in search, such as thank-you pages, internal search results or duplicate print versions. Never on pages you want to rank.
