Core Web Vitals Explained
Google's three measures of how a page feels to use. A page passes when at least three in four visits meet each threshold.
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)
- How long the main content takes to appear. Good: 2.5 seconds or less. web.dev: Core Web Vitals
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP)
- How quickly the page responds when someone taps or clicks. Good: 200 milliseconds or less. It needs real visitor data, so lab tests cannot measure it.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)
- How much the layout jumps while loading. Good: 0.1 or less.
- Performance score
- A lab score out of 100 from one simulated load. Useful for spotting problems, but real visitor data is what Google uses.
- Real visitor data or lab test
- Where the page has enough Chrome visitors, the results are from real visits over 28 days. Otherwise we show the whole site's data, or a lab test when there is none.
How to Speed Up a Slow Page
The fixes that usually move Core Web Vitals most, in order.
Shrink and size your images
Serve images in WebP or AVIF at the size they are shown, and give each one a width and height so the layout does not jump.
Load the main content first
Do not lazy load the hero image, and preload it if it is set in CSS. That is often the single biggest LCP win.
Cut third-party scripts
Chat widgets, heatmaps and tag managers often slow INP. Remove what you do not use and delay the rest until after the page loads.
Cache and compress
Serve the site through a CDN with caching and compression switched on, so repeat visits and far away visitors load fast.
Reserve space for late content
Banners, embeds and ads that appear late push the page down. Give them a fixed space to cut CLS.
