Key Takeaways

  • GEO is the work of getting your business cited or recommended inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • It builds on SEO: an AI engine can only quote pages it can reach, read and trust.
  • In the research that named GEO, adding sources, quotations and statistics lifted visibility in AI answers by 30 to 40%. Keyword stuffing did little.
  • Start with access and answers: let AI crawlers in, answer each question in the first two sentences, and back claims with sources.
  • Measure it by asking the engines your buyers' questions every month, not only by tracking rankings.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your business named, quoted or linked inside the answers that AI engines write. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Mode "who is the best roofer near me" or "which accounting software suits a small agency", GEO decides whether your name is in the answer.

Traditional SEO earns a place in a list of links. GEO earns a place inside the answer itself. The two overlap heavily, and this guide covers what is different, what the research says works, and how to start.

What Generative Engine Optimization Means

A generative engine is a search tool that writes an answer instead of only listing pages. It reads a set of sources, pulls out the passages it trusts, and combines them into a reply, often with links to where each part came from.

The term comes from a 2023 research paper by a team from Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, later published at the KDD 2024 conference. The authors defined GEO as a way for website owners to improve how visible their content is in these AI answers, measured by how much of the answer draws on their page and how prominently it is cited.

In practice, GEO covers three outcomes:

  • Citation: the engine links to your page as a source for part of its answer.
  • Mention: the engine names your business or product, with or without a link.
  • Recommendation: the engine suggests you when someone asks who to hire or what to buy.

You will also see the same work called answer engine optimization (AEO), AI SEO or LLM optimization. The names differ; the job is the same.

Why GEO Matters Now

AI answers are no longer a side feature. They are where a large share of searches now start and, increasingly, end.

The pattern is clear: ranking first still matters, but it is worth less when an answer sits above it. The businesses named inside that answer get the attention that used to go to the top link.

How AI Engines Choose Which Sources to Cite

Each engine works a little differently, but most follow the same broad steps:

  1. Understand the question, then often split it into several related searches. Google calls this "query fan-out".
  2. Retrieve candidate pages from a search index, their own or a partner's.
  3. Pick the passages that answer each part of the question most directly and credibly.
  4. Write the answer and attach sources to the claims it makes.

Two findings follow from this. First, you cannot be cited from a page the engine cannot reach or read. Google states that to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and that no other special requirements apply.

Second, page-one rankings are no longer the whole story. In a March 2026 study of 863,000 searches, Ahrefs found that only 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews also ranked in the top 10 for that search, down from about 76% in its July 2025 study. Ahrefs links the change to fan-out: Google cites pages that answer the follow-up questions, not only the original one.

GEO and SEO: What Changes and What Stays

What stays the same is the foundation. Crawlable pages, clear structure, fast loading and a site that other sites link to help in both. Google's own guidance for AI features lists content quality, technical SEO, page experience and internal linking as the things to focus on.

What the Research Says Works

The GEO paper tested nine ways of rewriting a page and measured how visible it became in AI answers. Three methods came out on top: adding citations to credible sources, adding quotations from relevant experts, and adding statistics in place of vague claims. Together they lifted visibility by 30 to 40% on the paper's main measure, and the authors saw gains of up to 37% when they tested on Perplexity.

Two other results are worth knowing:

  • Keyword stuffing barely helped. Adding more of the query's keywords, a habit carried over from old SEO, offered "little to no improvement" in AI answers.
  • Smaller sites gained the most. The biggest lifts went to pages that ranked lower in regular search. In one of the paper's tests, citing sources raised the visibility of the fifth-ranked site by 115%.

The authors also found that what works varies by topic, so treat these as starting points to test, not rules.

How to Start With GEO: Six Steps

1. Let AI crawlers read your site

Check your robots.txt file. If it blocks crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), PerplexityBot or Googlebot, those engines cannot read your pages. Blocking training crawlers such as GPTBot or Google-Extended is a separate choice: Google says Google-Extended does not affect whether you appear in Google Search.

2. Answer first

Put the direct answer in the first one or two sentences under each heading, then the detail. Engines lift passages, and a passage that answers on its own is easier to lift.

3. Back claims with sources and numbers

Link to the study, the regulator or the manufacturer. Use specific figures with a date. This is the pattern the GEO paper found most effective.

4. Cover the follow-up questions

List the questions buyers ask after the first one: cost, timing, risks, alternatives. Answer each on the page or on a page you link to. Fan-out means the engine is looking for these too.

5. Make your business easy to identify

Use the same business name, address and description everywhere: your site, your Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Add structured data that matches what the page shows, such as Organization or LocalBusiness markup.

6. Earn mentions where the engines look

AI answers lean on sources the web already trusts: industry publications, review sites, directories, forums and comparison pages. Being mentioned there, with real reviews and real results, is the GEO version of link building.

How to Measure GEO

Rankings alone will not tell you whether GEO is working. Track these instead:

  • Mentions for your buyers' questions. Write down 20 to 50 questions your customers ask, ask each engine every month, and record whether you are named, cited or recommended, and who is named instead.
  • AI referral traffic. Visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com show up as referrals in Google Analytics 4. Watch the trend and which pages they land on.
  • Search Console. Google counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the "Web" search type in the Performance report, so they are part of your normal search data rather than a separate report.
  • Leads. As with any channel, the number that matters is calls, forms and bookings from the people who found you this way.

Where to Go From Here

If your pages already rank, GEO is mostly about making them easier to quote and your business easier to recognize. If they do not, start with the SEO basics, because an engine cannot cite a page it cannot find.

We do this work for service businesses and online stores. Our AI search optimization service starts with a baseline of how often AI engines name you today, then works on access, answers and mentions until that number moves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GEO the same as SEO?

No, but they overlap. SEO earns a place in a list of links. GEO earns a mention inside the answer itself. Both need pages that search engines can crawl and index, so good SEO is the foundation GEO is built on.

Is GEO the same as AEO or AI SEO?

They are names for the same job. Answer engine optimization (AEO), AI SEO and LLM optimization all describe getting content used and cited by AI answers. GEO is the name used in the 2023 research paper that defined the field.

How long does GEO take to work?

Changes that make a page easier to quote can show up as soon as the engines recrawl it, which can be days for Google. Being recommended by name across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity usually takes months, because it depends on mentions of your business across the wider web.

Do I need special schema or an llms.txt file for AI Overviews?

Google says no. Its guidance for AI features states that there is no special schema.org markup and no AI text file needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data still helps search engines understand a page when it matches what the page shows.

Can you guarantee my business will be named by ChatGPT?

Nobody can honestly promise a specific citation, because the engines decide. What can be promised is measurable movement: how often you are named for an agreed set of questions, compared with a baseline taken before the work starts.
