How Long Should a Title and Meta Description Be?

Google sets no character limit. It shortens titles and descriptions to fit the width of the result, so the real limit is pixels. These are the widths the result box shows today, with the rough character counts they allow.

Title tag: about 600 pixels
Roughly 50 to 60 characters, depending on the letters. Put the words that matter first, so a cut title still says what the page is. Google: title links
Meta description on desktop: about 920 pixels
Roughly 150 to 160 characters over two lines. Write the complete thought in the first 120 characters, because mobile shows less. Google: snippets
Meta description on mobile: about 680 pixels
Roughly 120 characters. Test both views in the preview above; most searches for local services happen on phones.
Google may rewrite either one
Google often writes its own snippet from the page when it matches the search better, and sometimes changes titles. A clear, specific description that matches the page is used most often.

How to Write a Title and Description That Earn the Click

Length gets you seen in full. The words get you clicked.

  1. Lead with what the searcher typed

Put the service and the place at the start of the title: 'Roof Repair in Austin' before your brand name.

  2. Give one reason to choose you

Same-week visits, a written warranty, a price range: one specific fact beats three adjectives.

  3. End the description with the next step

Book a free inspection, get a quote in an hour, see prices. Tell the searcher what happens when they click.

  4. Check both devices

Switch the preview to mobile. If the key message falls after the cut, move it forward.

Meta Description and Title Length Questions

What is the ideal meta description length?
Aim for about 150 to 160 characters on desktop, which is roughly 920 pixels, and make sure the first 120 characters work alone for mobile. Google measures width, not characters, so a description full of wide letters is cut sooner.
How long should a title tag be?
About 50 to 60 characters, which fits the roughly 600 pixel title width in Google's results. Longer titles are not penalised, but the end is cut off, so put the important words first.
Does meta description length affect rankings?
No. Google has said the meta description is not used for ranking. It affects how many people click your result, which is why it is still worth writing well.
Why does Google show a different description from mine?
Google writes its own snippet when another part of the page answers the search better. It keeps yours most often when it is specific, accurate and matches what the page says.
Is the meta description length different on mobile?
Yes. Mobile results show less, about 680 pixels or roughly 120 characters. Switch the preview to mobile to see where yours is cut.
Why does the preview not match exactly what I see in Google?
Real results can add dates, ratings, site links and bold words that match the search, and Google changes its layout from time to time. The preview shows the length and cut point of your text, which is what you control.
