Open Graph and X Tags Explained

The tags social platforms read to build a link preview. Put them in the head of every page you want shared.

og:title
The headline on the card. Write it for the share, without your brand name and separators if the site name is shown anyway. The Open Graph protocol
og:description
One or two sentences under the headline. Say why the link is worth opening.
og:image
The picture on the card, as a full https address. Use at least 1200 by 630 pixels; LinkedIn asks for 1200 by 627 or more and a file under 5 MB. LinkedIn: make your website shareable
og:image:width and og:image:height
The image size in pixels. Meta says to set both so the image loads properly the first time the link is shared. Meta: webmaster guide to sharing
og:type and og:site_name
What the page is (website, article, product) and your site's name, shown on some cards.
twitter:card
The card type on X. summary_large_image shows the image full width; without it you get a small thumbnail. X falls back to the Open Graph tags for everything else. X: cards markup

How to Get a Good Link Preview

Five fixes that make shared links look intentional.

  1. Add an og:image to every page

Make one at 1200 by 630 pixels with the page's subject clear at a small size. Templates can build one per page from the title.

  2. Set its width and height

Add og:image:width and og:image:height so the image shows on the very first share instead of after a refresh.

  3. Write a share title and description

Keep the title short enough for two lines and make the description say what the reader gets.

  4. Add twitter:card

One tag, <meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">, turns the small X card into a full width one.

  5. Refresh the platforms' cache

Platforms remember old previews. After a change, run the page through Meta's Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn's Post Inspector to fetch it again.

Open Graph Preview Questions

What are Open Graph tags?
Meta tags in a page's head that tell social platforms what title, description and image to show when someone shares the link. Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and many others read them, and X falls back to them.
What size should an og:image be?
At least 1200 by 630 pixels, in a 1.91 to 1 ratio. LinkedIn asks for at least 1200 by 627 pixels and a file under 5 MB.
Why does my old image still show when I share the link?
Platforms cache previews. Fetch the page again in Meta's Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn's Post Inspector after you change the tags.
Do I need twitter tags if I have Open Graph tags?
Only twitter:card. X reads the Open Graph title, description and image when its own tags are missing, but the card type has no fallback, so add summary_large_image for a full width card.
Do Open Graph tags help SEO?
Not directly; Google does not rank pages on them. They make shared links look better and earn more clicks, which brings visitors and, over time, mentions and links.
Is the preview exact?
Close, not pixel perfect. Each platform changes its cards from time to time and crops images in its own way; the preview shows the title, description and image each one will use.
