Which Schema Type Do You Need?

Schema markup is code that states facts about a page in a form machines read without guessing. Pick the type that matches what the page is about; many pages carry two or three.

Organization
On your homepage or about page: your name, logo, contact details and links to your official profiles, so search engines and AI can confirm who you are. Google: organization
Local business
For businesses with an address or a service area: the type of business, address, phone, hours and map position. Pick the most specific type, such as Dentist or Plumber. Google: local business
FAQ page
For pages with questions and answers written by you. Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health sites since 2023, but the markup still makes your answers easy to read and quote. Google: FAQ
Product
For product pages: name, image, price, availability and ratings. Google needs a price or a rating before it shows product details in results. Google: product
Article
For blog posts, guides and news: headline, author, dates and image. A named author helps readers and engines trust the piece. Google: article
Breadcrumb
Shows where the page sits in your site, which Google can display instead of the raw URL. Google: breadcrumb

How to Add Schema Markup to Your Site

Four steps from form to live markup.

  1. Choose the type and fill in the form

Use the same details that appear on the page. Markup that says something the page does not is against Google's guidelines.

  2. Clear the warnings

Warnings list what Google requires or recommends. Required fields decide whether rich results can appear at all.

  3. Paste the code into the page

Put the script in the page's HTML, in the head or body. On WordPress, use a header code plugin or your SEO plugin's custom schema box; on Shopify, the theme's layout file.

  4. Test it

Paste the page URL or the code into Google's Rich Results Test. Then watch the Enhancements reports in Search Console over the following weeks.

Schema Markup Questions

What is a schema markup generator?
A tool that turns a simple form into JSON-LD structured data, the code search engines read to understand a page's facts: who the business is, what a product costs, what a question's answer is. This one covers the six types small businesses use most.
Does schema markup improve rankings?
Not directly. Google says structured data is not a ranking factor, but it can make a page eligible for rich results, such as product prices, ratings and breadcrumbs, which can earn more clicks. It also helps AI engines state your facts correctly.
Is JSON-LD better than microdata?
Google recommends JSON-LD because it sits in one block, separate from the page's HTML, which makes it easier to add and keep correct. Both are valid.
Will FAQ schema still show dropdowns in Google?
For most sites, no. Since 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health websites. The markup is still worth adding where you have real questions and answers, because it makes them easy for search engines and AI to read.
Can I add review stars for my own business?
Google does not show star ratings from reviews a business publishes about itself on its own site for Organization or LocalBusiness markup. Product ratings can show. For your business, the stars come from your Google Business Profile.
Which local business type should I choose?
The most specific one that fits: Dentist rather than MedicalClinic, Plumber rather than LocalBusiness. If none fits, the general Local business type is fine.
Where do I put the JSON-LD code?
Anywhere in the page's HTML, usually in the head. Google reads it wherever it is, as long as it is in the HTML the server sends or added before the page finishes loading.
How do I test schema markup?
Paste the page URL or the code into Google's Rich Results Test to see which rich results it qualifies for, and the Schema.org validator to check the markup itself.
